Payments & Security on Nutze
On Nutze, you have full flexibility. When creating a listing, the owner decides whether they want to use Secure Payment via the platform or prefer a free Cash Payment upon handover. Here we explain how both methods work and how we protect you and your money.
Option A: Secure Payment
RecommendedFor listings displaying the "Secure Payment" badge, the entire transaction is securely processed via our payment partner Stripe. This offers maximum protection for both renters and owners.
How does the process work?
- The Reservation (Authorization): As soon as you request a booking (or confirm via Instant Booking), Stripe authorizes the rental amount (plus a potential deposit) on your payment method. The money is not yet deducted, but merely reserved on your card or account. As a renter you never pay a service fee — you only pay rent and deposit.
- The Digital Handshake: You meet the owner. You inspect the item and confirm the handover together digitally in the Nutze app.
- The Charge (Capture): The payment is only finalized the exact second you both confirm the return in the digital return protocol at the end of the rental. The money is securely held in an escrow account and paid out to the owner — minus the platform service fee, which the owner bears — in the following days. This ensures you only pay for things you actually have in your hands.
Which payment methods can I use?
You can pay conveniently and securely using:
- Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)
- Apple Pay & Google Pay (automatically displayed depending on your device)
- SEPA Direct Debit
How does the security deposit work?
If the owner requires a security deposit, it will not be deducted from your account. The amount is simply "frozen" (authorized) on your card. As soon as you return the item and the owner confirms in the app that everything is in perfect condition, this reservation is released immediately.
Note: Depending on your bank, it may take 2–5 business days for the release to show up in your banking app.
Option B: Free Cash Payment (Private)
For listings with the "Cash Payment" badge, Nutze.app acts merely as an intermediary to connect you. No money flows through our systems — so the owner does not pay a service fee either.
- The Process: You book your dates in the app, clarify details in the chat, and pay the rental price (and a potential deposit) directly to the owner in cash or via PayPal at the handover.
- The Protocol: Even with cash payments, you still use our digital handover protocol in the app, where the owner explicitly confirms: "I have received the money in cash." This provides clarity and peace of mind for both sides.
Important Note: Since no money flows through our systems in this scenario, we cannot offer buyer/seller protection or automatic platform insurance for these transactions.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What happens in case of a cancellation?
This depends on the chosen payment method:
- Secure Payment: Refunds are based on the listing's cancellation policy. If the owner cancels, you will always receive 100% of your money back. The reservation on your card is simply voided. For amounts that have already been charged, the refund usually takes 5–10 business days.
- Cash Payment: Since no money was processed through us, the booking is simply canceled in the system. No costs apply.
What happens if I am late returning the item?
Nutze calculates prices based on a fair 24-hour cycle. Your timer starts the exact minute you both sign off on the digital handover protocol. In case of massive delays at return (outside the grace period), the owner can request a fair late fee for an additional day via the system.
Who or what is Stripe?
Stripe is one of the world's leading providers of online payments and the infrastructure behind millions of companies—from startups to global brands like Shopify, Booking.com, and Zoom.
To ensure secure processing of card data, Stripe is PCI-DSS Level 1 certified (the highest security standard in the financial industry). Nutze.app never stores your card data—all sensitive information is sent directly and encrypted to Stripe.
